Jekyll is one of the most widely used static site generators. With tons of themes available, you can quickly get your site up and running. Here are some websites where you can find Jekyll themes, both free and paid.
Table of Contents
Jekyllthemes.io
Jekyllthemes.io is maintained by web designer and developer Mike Harmer. This site contains a directory of free and premium themes. You can browse themes by type and get a live demo for each theme. It is currently active and gets occasionally updated.
Jekyllthemes.org
What I like about this website is that each theme has its own page where you can view details about it. Each page displays the theme’s features and has links for either accessing its repository page to download it or to view a live demo. The website also has a search feature where you can look for themes based on tags. It could display the search results better but it’s a nice feature for filtering themes.
Just note that this website hasn’t been actively maintained and some links may not work because of that. However, it still has over 20 pages of themes to look through.
Jekyllthemes.com
Like Jekyllthemes.org, Jekyllthemes.com has individual pages for themes where you can view details and get repository and download links. The website also has a categories page and a search bar where you can filter by tags. Only free themes are displayed on the website. If you click on the “paid” tab, it redirects you to Theme Forest. There’s also an opportunity to contact them to either submit a Jekyll theme or to hire a Jekyll developer to build one for you.
Theme Forest
Theme Forest is a marketplace where users can sell and purchase themes for several platforms, including Jekyll themes. You can use search filters to narrow down your search and sort the themes further to get the themes you want. This website only has paid themes so you’ll have to look at the other websites for free themes.
Jam Stack Themes
Jamstack has themes for many static site generators including Jekyll. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a search option and filter options are limited. You can only filter Jekyll themes by CSS library and archetype. However, it’s still a good resource as it contains a few hundred themes.
HTML Rev
Like Jamstack, HTML Rev has themes for different static site generators. However, the collection of Jekyll themes is much smaller than the other sites.
Jekyll Themes Dev
On Jekyllthemes.dev, you can browse through a collection of themes by searching, using tags, or filtering by theme type. However, not all themes have previews so you will have to click on the theme page to see a preview and for more details.
JekyllRC
This website hasn’t been updated in years, but there is still a somewhat sizeable collection of Jekyll themes. There isn’t a search feature, but sorting options are available. There is even a “shuffle” option to randomly sort the themes.
Built at Light Speed
Built at Light Speed is a marketplace for downloading and uploading themes for different platforms. There are both free and paid themes. The filtering options aren’t the greatest, but there is a wide variety of themes available.
Some Things to Note
Despite the handful of websites that provide Jekyll themes, there are a few things to note.
- Some websites are updated more frequently than others. The more frequently updated websites will have more recent themes than the websites that are not updated as often.
- Some links could be broken, so you might not be able to view a live demo or find a place to download the theme.
- You’ll see some of the same themes posted on other websites.
- There is a mixture of new and old themes. The websites just share the themes and you are advised to check out the repository page to view the theme’s features, usage policies, and maintenance frequency.
These resources should help you find a Jekyll theme that suits your needs. There are hundreds to choose from that serve different purposes. Check out the live demos for these themes, try them out, and see which theme works for you.
